Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are currently not informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials stated they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the community for information.
A high-ranking official said the incident rendered him speechless and had to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
